Samsung Galaxy S6 & Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge: Now Available in Gold
Continuing the success of the Galaxy S series, Samsung released a flagship duo, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 10th. The most notable difference the first time you look at these two smartphones is the screen design. Galaxy S6 comes with conservative-flat screen style, while the Galaxy S6 edge comes with curves. When they were released, both smartphones are available in white and black color only, but now Samsung also released the gold versions of these two smartphones.
Basically, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have pretty much the same design, both have that unmistakably “Samsung Look”, but the curvy screen on the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge – which is pretty much the only difference regarding the design concept of these two smartphones – has made a really significant difference. Galaxy S6 is like a more elegant version of the S5, while the Galaxy S6 edge looks more futuristic with the screen and front glass slightly curved.
If you are familiar with the Galaxy Note series, you will immediately notice that the Galaxy S6 edge design is a bit similar to the Galaxy Note 4 edge, but the difference is, the Galaxy Note 4 edge only has one curve on the right-hand side of the screen. Looks like the Galaxy Note 4 edge design was some kind of an experiment to see how the market reacted, and looks like it was pretty welcomed so Samsung is presenting another sexy-futuristic look on their Smartphone.
No doubt that this flashy look will capture a lot of people’s attention, but not so fast, because there is a drawback to this design. A lot of people think that it makes the phone quite uncomfortable to hold because the edges are a bit to thin.
Instead of using plastic, the bodies of these smartphones are built with glass and metal, making these phones feel and look more premium with nice texture providing a good grip on the back. However, it could get a bit messy easily with obvious fingerprint marks.
Both Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are relatively compact, but the Galaxy S6 edge is a bit bigger with 5.65″ x 2.78″ x 7mm dimensions. While the Galaxy S6 has 5.59″ x 2.76″ x 6.8mm dimensions. Both smartphones are also pretty light with only 4.66 oz for the S6 edge and 4.87 oz for the Galaxy S6.
So both models are pretty thin and the differences in regards to dimensions are not very significant. But to be thinner, you would have to make some sacrifices, both the S6 and S6 edge don’t have the water or dust-proof features like in the Galaxy S5, they also don’t have removable battery cover and SD card slots.
Both phones have 5.1 inches screen (diagonally measured) with 1440 x 2560 pixels resolutions. Both have impressive color accuracy, brightness levels, and viewing angles. However, in terms of maximum viewing angles, brightness, and color reproduction, Galaxy S6 is slightly better than the Galaxy S6 edge.
User Interface & Functions
The user interface for these phones are definitely a plus point compared to other Samsung devices that came with TouchWiz technology. The user interface for Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are much simpler and straightforward making them more comfortable to use for most people. This new TouchWiz technology also looks more dynamic and more personal with its theming abilities. You can personalize the appearance of important display items such as icons, wallpapers, color accents and you even have various options to alter the layout of some core apps. Both powered by the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop that offers some new features like Pinning and Android Smart Lock.
One Hand Operation
The well thought out interface elements with their compact sizes, making these phones very comfortable to use with only one hand. Everything is reachable with a single thumb, you can easily cheack your email, calling, texting, or check the weather.
The New TouchWiz
On the surface, it looks just like the TouchWiz we all knew but as stated above, it has been toned down to provide a more direct TouchWiz experience. One little drawback is its less attractive appearance when compared with other Android interfaces with modern attractiveness.
Memory and Processor
Even though Samsung has always promised that their Galaxy smartphones will offer expandable storage, unfortunately the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge can only offer internal storage. Therefore you should choose wisely between 3 available models (based on storage capacity); 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB. Please note that the 32GB versions will only have about 23GB of usable space, some people might fill it out very quickly, but it all depends on your usage habits though.
Both phones are equipped with Samsung’s 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420. They also come with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM and the Mali-T760 GPU. All these devices are making the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge the fastest models in the Galaxy series even though they provide Quad-HD resolution. These specs should be powerful enough to handle any game title out there, including the most demanding ones.
However, since they are new, these phones haven’t been quite “tested” by the market. So far they are flawless in performance, but we don’t know exactly how they will maintain the performance when there are many extra apps installed and add some extra weight to the background process.
No doubt that these smartphones are excellent devices to browse the internet. You can choose between using Google Chrome or Samsung’s internet app to browse the internet. The Quad-HD super AMOLED display can really offer an unmatched browsing experience, this feature can display even the tiniest picture with incredible detail. Furthermore both models are equipped with super fast system and excellent navigation controls.
Galaxy S6 and S6 edge also come with finger print sensor, this enables you to sign into certain sites automatically rather than having to insert your username and password.
Samsung Pay Service
These are the first Samsung devices that come with Samsung’s new Pay Service, which is the Apple Pay competitor. At the moment Samsung has partnered up with MasterCard and Visa, They are planning to expand real soon to partner up with other big players such as Chase, Bank of America, and American Express.
This could be one of the most appealing feature of these smartphones. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge come with 16-megapixel Sony IMX240 sensor that’s also found in Galaxy Note 4’s camera. However in the S6 and S6 edge, Samsung also added a wider f/1.9 aperture lens, which means more light can be drawn by the sensor, so it’s very useful in low light photography. Other features offered by the camera include the infrared white balance, LED flash, BSI, and optical image stabilization.
TouchWiz is offering a quite nice music player that could be a great alternative to Google Music Player. The two smartphones also come with great speaker power. The Galaxy S6 edge has 75.4 db of power on its bottom edge, while the Galaxy S6 comes with a lower power at 73.7 db.
After Releasing only white and black versions, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge now have their gold versions. However they are still quite difficult to find. Looks like many consumers that have been waiting anxiously for these gold versions of the S6 and S6 edge should have to be more patient until they can be found easily on the market. Right now they are only available in a few retailers with limited stocks.
